Each empty eyeliner tube comes with a rubber insert for the opening to keep air out and prevent unwanted leaking

As a product type, liquid eyeliners can be water-based gels or thin emulsions. Gels contain water phase thickeners to give the product a thicker consistency and to help to suspend the pigments (which would quickly settle to the bottom in ordinary water). Emulsions are very thin and light, with a large water phase and stabilizers to prevent any separation.

Similarly to mascaras, eyeliners can also contain film-formers to create a protective film on the skin, increase wear-time and improve water-resistance. Just like any product that contains water, liquid eyeliners need to contain a broad-spectrum preservative in their formula.
