Rose Water is made by steeping rose petals in water.

Due to its sweet scent it is mainly used as a perfume but it has medicinal & culinary uses as well.

Benefits & Uses of Rose Water

Skin

Skin cells are protected from damage by the antioxidants in rose water.  The anti-inflammatory properties means it can be used to soothe irritation caused by skin conditions such as eczema and rosacea.

It can also act as an inhibitor against elastase and collagenase, which are both harmful to the skin.  This can help soothe the skin and reduce redness.  It can also act as an anti-ageing product helping to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Respiratory

Its soothing and anti-inflammatory effect means it can be taken to treat a sore throat.  Furthermore it can act as a relaxant for the muscles in the throat.

Eyes

In liquid form rose water can be used in eye drops and has been proven to be beneficial for people with eye problems.

Conditions it can help for include:

  • conjunctivitis
  • conjunctival xerosis or dry eye
  • acute dacryocystitis
  • degenerative conditions, such as pterygium or pinguecula
  • cataracts

Wounds

The antiseptic and antibacterial properties means it can help heal wounds faster by keeping them clean and fighting infections.

Rose water can treat the following types of wounds:

  • burns
  • cuts
  • scars

Infections

The antiseptic properties of rose water promotes the creation of histamines by the immune system and has been shown useful in fighting infections

Brain

Inhaling rose water vapors has been proven to improve a person’s mood and also help treat headaches and migraines.

When taken orally it has been shown that rose water has antidepressant and anti-anxiety properties.  Further it is believed to induce sleep and have a hypnotic effect similar to that of the pharmaceutical drug diazepam.

It has been used to treat a number of mental health conditions, including:

  • depression
  • grief
  • stress
  • tension

In other medical cases, it has been known to be beneficial in the treatment of conditions such as dementia & Alzheimer’s disease.

Safety & Side Effects

For safety, one should apply a small amount of product to their arm.  If there is no adverse or allergic reaction within 24hrs, it can be safely applied elsewhere.

In some cases an individual may have a reaction to the product due to a particular and unknown sensitivity

This can include:

  • burning
  • stinging
  • redness
  • irritation
